UN Ocean Decade 2021–2030 · We're in it. Right now.

“The ocean is the most important
place on planet earth.”

— Sir David Attenborough

Yet for most people, it's out of sight and out of mind. A world beneath the surface is quietly collapsing — and almost nobody knows.

Surfshack exists to change that.

What's happening beneath the surface

90%

of large predatory fish stocks have been decimated by a century of overfishing

30%

of Irish waters should be protected by 2030 under the EU Biodiversity Strategy — Ireland is far behind that target

2,000+

community clean-up groups already work Ireland's coastline through Clean Coasts — proof of how much is left to do

Ireland's 3,000km of Atlantic coastline carries pressures that rarely make headlines — marine litter, neoprene waste from a growing surf population, and runoff that compounds quietly with every tide. The breaks that make Ireland one of Europe's great surf destinations are the same coastline that needs protecting.

“Out of sight, out of mind” has led to catastrophic underreporting of marine decline in Ireland, the UK, and dozens of other coastal nations.

One stay. Two healings.

We're in this for the health of the ocean —and the health of people.

The ocean shapes Irish identity from Donegal to Cork. Yet it's under pressure in plain sight. Surfshack connects the coastline that needs healing most with the people who need healing most.

🌊

Ocean health

Every Surfshack stay funds beach clean-ups and marine litter removal on the coastline outside your window. We're working toward Ireland's own 30% marine protection target — the EU benchmark for a functioning ocean ecosystem.

  • €10/night from every booking goes to coastal restoration
  • Worn-out wetsuits collected and given new life through The Upcycle Movement
  • Pre-build beach clean-ups run in partnership with Clean Coasts
  • Safety guidance developed alongside Water Safety Ireland
🧠

Human health

Being by the ocean lowers cortisol, improves sleep, reduces anxiety, and rebuilds cognitive clarity. Doctors are beginning to prescribe time in nature. Surfshack is where that prescription gets filled.

  • Coastal retreats designed for deep restoration — not just a holiday
  • Surfing, bodyboarding, and guided ocean experiences via Irish Surfing-affiliated clubs
  • Partner with Liquid Therapy for inclusive, adaptive ocean therapy
  • Every stay contributes to Pieta's 24/7 national crisis helpline

Design & materials

Built from the coastline.

Every Surfshack Ireland touchpoint tells a story of circular restoration. The waste that threatens the coast becomes part of the solution.

Neoprene Upcycling

Old wetsuits, reborn — Irish design studio

🌊

Neo Collection

by The Upcycle Movement

Every Surfshack Ireland location runs a wetsuit collection point. Worn-out neoprene that would otherwise go to landfill is sent to The Upcycle Movement, an Irish design studio that remakes it into bags and accessories through their Neo Collection.

Surfers and surf schools across Ireland generate significant neoprene waste every season. The Upcycle Movement gives that waste a second life instead of a landfill.

Clean Coasts

An Taisce coastal programme

Before a single Surfshack opens its doors, we run a community beach clean-up at the local break in partnership with Clean Coasts — supporting a network of over 2,000 community groups already working Ireland's coastline.

Clean Coasts is funded in part by Fáilte Ireland — pairing tourism and coastal care under the same mission Surfshack is built on.
